Bowne Announces Breakthrough Print on Demand Digital Printing Capabilities

Press release from the issuing company

New York, Bowne & Co., Inc. (NYSE: BNE), the world's largest financial printer and the industry leader in document management, today announced the installation of two new high speed OcÈ digital on-demand printing production lines in its Carlstadt, New Jersey digital printing facility. The lines include inline saddle stitching, which significantly adds speed and flexibility to the time sensitive business of printing and delivering financial documents. After an extensive research and development process, Bowne is now the first financial printer in the world to incorporate OcÈ Printing Systems USA's newest on-demand digital printing technologies. Robert M. Johnson, Chairman and CEO of Bowne stated, "Today, more than ever, financial services companies must communicate in minutes, not days. For example, when the Securities industry moves to a 'transaction plus one day' settlement environment (T + 1), deals must be settled within one day compared to today's three-day environment. "Never before has it been so important to produce exact financial documents in such a short period of time," Johnson continued. "As the world's largest financial printer, Bowne is leading the way in revolutionizing and streamlining the document creation, management and distribution lifecycle -- hence providing customers with faster time to market." The company explained that the source content/data for the documents is also formatted for the Web, meaning that companies can choose to have their documents fulfilled either in print or online. "The SEC is proposing and adopting new communications and disclosure regulations in response to the rapid changes that have come about because of the Internet, new technologies and the trend toward a more global financial community. Our clients want to be on top of all the new developments so they can comply with the regulations AND offer their customers and investors a variety of ways to receive their financial documents - be they traditional print, print-on-demand, electronic media or via e-fulfillment. With the introduction of print-on-demand for financial printing, Bowne can provide our customers with support for all communications mediums," Johnson concluded. Bowne began by seeking a complete in-line finishing solution that would be suitable for both small and large print runs of different paper weights. After reviewing numerous systems, Bowne entered into an agreement with OcÈ Printing Systems USA, Inc. to incorporate OcÈ's newest technologies, including the DemandStream 8090DI printer coupled with the IBIS DigiStitcher DS2000 -- recognized as the world's fastest inline saddle stitching device -- for digital print-on-demand systems. Larry Durso, Vice President and General Manager of Bowne Digital Solutions, said, "In our efforts to create a competitive advantage for our digital print solutions, we searched for new manufacturing technologies and software systems that could produce low to mid-range volume print runs with rapid turnaround deliveries and still use these same systems for current high volume production outputs, such as with our statement production. After an extensive and challenging search, we chose the OcÈ DemandStream 8090DI Printers and DigiStitchers because they provide the speed and flexibility needed to benefit Bowne's clients." The new digital print-on-demand systems complement other technology achievements at Bowne in recent years, including technology-based shareholder communications and information/document management initiatives in the areas of typesetting, document collaboration, digital asset/data warehousing and document production/management.
