Global Graphics Acquires MAXWorkFlow Products and Hires Development Team from Harris Publishing Systems

Press release from the issuing company

Cambridge, UK, -- Global Graphics (EASDAQ:GLGR), the world's leading OEM supplier of software and equipment to the graphic arts industry announced today that it has acquired the complete MAXWorkFlow product line from Harris Publishing Systems Corporation (HPSC), a subsidiary of Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS). The purchase of the MAXWorkFlow product line, which was completed through Harlequin Ltd., includes all source code, intellectual property, and four (4) pending patents. Furthermore, as part of the acquisition Harlequin will hire the team responsible for the development and technical support of the MAXWorkFlow product. MAXWorkFlow is a next-generation, patent pending Visual Workflow Design Tool for automating the process of proofing and output to film, plate, or direct print. The unique drag-and-drop features of the MAXWorkFlow System Design Palette(TM) make historically complex prepress setups simple. Integrated with the complete range of Harlequin RIPFlow and Jaws RIP technologies and options, the MAXWorkFlow product has more than twenty (20) different modules that perform key tasks such as proofing, high-resolution outputting, EPS and PDF optimization, down sampling, composite proofing, imposition, trapping, and pre-flighting multiple file formats, including PDF. Unique in the market is that MAXWorkFlow is an open architecture workflow tool which allows OEMs to create customized workflows based on any industry standard file format including PostScript(R), PDF, EPS, TIFF, TIFF/IT-P1, while simultaneously taking advantage of existing Harlequin output plug-ins - allowing OEMs to integrate their own proprietary technology to quickly offer a powerful workflow product, but still differentiate themselves from other OEMs. This acquisition combined with the existing Harlequin and Jaws Systems Limited technology gives Harlequin full ownership and control of the complete MAXWorkFlow product and underlying technology and is a key part of Global Graphic's and Harlequin's strategic plan to provide broader and more complete OEM software solutions to all segments of the Graphic Arts industry. Harlequin will see immediate sales of the products through both ECRM and Harris Publishing. ECRM is a world-leading supplier of Computer-to-plate (CTP) and film imagesetting devices and is a long-standing Harlequin customer that has been promoting MAXWorkFlow since Drupa. ECRM is now poised to move from its beta-testing phase into full shipment of the product and plans to make MAXWorkFlow the standard workflow solution for all of its CTP sales next year. Harris Publishing, itself will remain very active in the sale of MAXWorkFlow under a post acquisition OEM arrangement and will continue to heavily push systems sales through both their newspaper and commercial channels. Under Harris the product line had already built up a customer base of over 100 customers, which includes major newspaper printers such as the St. Louis Post Dispatch (Pulitzer Publishing), the Daily Oklahoman, and commercial printers such as Quebecor World. With MAXWorkFlow Harlequin truly can provide OEM solutions which start with document creation, continue through document delivery, and include full workflow management of all production processes including RIPing, Color Management, Trapping, Imposition, proofing and final output to film, plate, or final document printing. Harlequin's plan is to drive MAXWorkFlow not only into the high-end print production market but also into the larger and rapidly growing middle market which includes print on demand, small office, copier and web based print arenas. "The acquisition of the MAXWorkFlow will now allow Harlequin to provide its OEMs with a highly competitive, configurable workflow solutions," said James Freidah, Chief Operating Officer of Global Graphics' Printing Software division. "The combination of technologies is unmatched in the industry, and will form the basis for continued development and innovation. MAXWorkFlow is unique in its ease of use, modularity and open architecture, and is therefore an ideal solution for many different customers and markets within the industry. Harlequin's strategy to deliver the product as a true workflow toolkit combined with Harlequin's ability to drive over 100 devices in the market will make this a very powerful OEM tool." According to Briggs Kilborne, Vice President of Harris Publishing Systems, "We initially formed a strategic relationship earlier this year with Harlequin because of their reputation for quality and responsiveness. MAXWorkFlow and Harlequin's RipFlow products are extremely complementary, and we believe that Harlequin has the skill and resources to continue to drive development of this powerful workflow solution. We look forward to continuing to work with Harlequin as an OEM.
