Onyx Graphics Color Scientists Honored with Awards, Patent and Publications

Press release from the issuing company

SALT LAKE CITY – Onyx Graphics, Inc., affirms its position as the market leader in wide-format printer RIP software with recent honors bestowed on its resident color scientists Dr. Max Derhak and Dr. Lin Luo (Eric). Among the honors are a Macbeth Award for outstanding contribution in the field of color science, a patent for establishing ink usage of process channels, and the publication of three prominent scientific papers in a leading color technology publication. Both men have helped in shaping the industry with their prominent successes.

Macbeth Award for iccMAX

Dr. Max Derhak is the Principal Scientist at Onyx Graphics and Co-Chair of the International Color Consortium (ICC). He was recently recognized with the Macbeth Award from the Inter-Society Color Council (ISCC), the principal professional society in the field of color in the United States encompassing the arts, sciences and industry. The award is given for one or more recent outstanding contributions in the field of color.

“Maxim Derhak has been selected by the award committee for his work on spectral color reproduction in the graphic arts, what has become known as iccMax,” said Dr. Danny C. Rich, Chair of the Macbeth Award Selection Committee. “We felt that this development was both recent and significant in its achievements and thus deserving of the recognition of the ISCC.” The award will be presented to Dr. Derhak at the Society for Imaging Science and Technology’s IS&T Color and Imaging Conference in San Diego later this year.

Dr. Derhak will also be providing an insightful lecture on the subject of “Driving the Future of Color” at the Specialty Graphic & Imaging Association (SGIA) annual exposition scheduled for September 14-16, 2016 in Las Vegas, where he will discuss how emerging technologies in color can solve some of today’s color management challenges. Dr. Derhak will present an overview of the next-generation color standard iccMAX, and will illustrate the potential impacts on areas such as wide format printing, photography, packaging, medical imaging and fine art reproduction.

Patent for ink usage calculations

A patent submitted in 2011 by Dr. Derhak was awarded in June 2016. Patent number 9,373,063 covers technology that enables auto-ink restrictions, which can lead to more efficient color profiles and better ink utilization.

Coloration Technology’s Award Winners

Dr. Lin Luo (Eric) recently had three published papers selected for inclusion in Coloration Technology’s Award Winners Virtual Issue 2015. This issue showcases award-winning papers published in Coloration Technology during 2015, alongside other outstanding articles that appeared in the journal. This series of papers, produced by a research group based at Hong Kong Polytechnic University that included Dr. Luo, continue working on looking at how color measurement can be adapted to analyze textile components easily and reliably. These applications include color matching of multi-colored fabrics with complex patterns and shapes.
