GREENWICH, Conn.--June 11, 2002--Quebecor World received industry recognition for excellence in product quality, when the Gravure Association of America recently presented the company with three Golden Cylinder Awards. The prestigious Golden Cylinder Awards are offered in an annual competition that recognizes excellence in print execution and technical innovations. Quebecor World was the only publication printer honored by the GAA with multiple awards. In commenting on these awards, John Paloian, Quebecor World's Group President Magazines/Catalogs stated, "We are delighted to have received this industry recognition for printing excellence. Our first responsibility to our customers is to maximize the print quality of the work we produce. We will continue to invest in our people and our processes to allow us to continue to lead the industry in this area." The Quebecor World divisions that were honored by the GAA are as follows: Quebecor World's Mt. Morris facility won an award for Carnival September 2001 in the Publication/Newsprint category. The entry presented a number of production challenges including PDF files directly engraved to gravure cylinders, offset printing the cover, gravure printing the body on newsprint paper, and inline assembly and gluing on the gravure press. The Mt. Morris division met the challenges and produced an award-winning product. Mt. Morris has won a total of six Golden Cylinder Awards in the past four years. Quebecor World Dyersburg's Crate & Barrel Holiday Lite 2001 won an award in the Publication/Lightweight Coated under 40# category. With both head and foot shorter than most "mainstream" catalogs, it exemplified the flexibility of the gravure process. The entry displayed great color, the result of combining outstanding color separation, cylinder engraving and print execution. This is the third time that Dyersburg has won a Golden Cylinder Award. Quebecor World Corinth's National Geographic - February 2001 was awarded the Golden Cylinder for the Publication/Coated over 40# category. Produced using innovative gravure techniques, the entry illustrated the ability of the gravure process to reproduce pictures so vivid that they bring the reader into the stories. The pages used four process colors, as well as special colors to intensify the pictures' contrast and shapes. Additionally, the registration challenges illustrate the ability of a gravure press to hold continuous register throughout a long run. This marks the sixth time that Quebecor World Corinth has won a Golden Cylinder for the National Geographic magazine in the last ten years.
