Kodak Receives 2000 GATF Intertech Award for Recipe Color Software

Press release from the issuing company

Kodak Polychrome Graphics has received the coveted 2000 Graphic Arts Technology Foundation (GATF) InterTech Technology Award for its revolutionary software system for digital proofing, Kodak Approval Recipe Color. Recipe Color software is the tenth Kodak Polychrome Graphics technology to receive a GATF InterTech Award and the only digital proofing technology honored this year. The InterTech Award, established in 1978, is the highest honour for innovation in the graphic arts industry and solidifies Kodak Polychrome Graphics leadership in digital proofing. Recipe Color software is based on a proprietary technology that uses a single bitmap image per spot color plate and exposes that plate multiple times to deposit the appropriate amount of each colorant to mix the defined spot colour. Recipe Color software's ability to reproduce spot color is made possible by the fully adjustable density of the donor technology and the ability to expose with dot on dot precision. The system's unique capabilities have also been recognized by Pantone Incorporated, one of the world's most respected resources for color accuracy, which has certified Approval XP/XP4 with Recipe Color as Pantone CalibratedÅ. "Recipe Color is truly a breakthrough technology. It can do things never before thought possible in digital proofing, and it creates significant cost efficiencies for users," said Jeff Jacobson, Chief Executive Officer of Kodak Polychrome Graphics. "We take great pride in sharing the InterTech Award with our employees who bring a true spirit of innovation to work with them everyday." Recipe Color software virtually eliminates the need to purchase and maintain large stocks of speciality donors, and drastically reduces media costs for spot colours. In addition, when using the metallic base with Recipe Color software the system can reproduce gold, silver, chrome, bronze and virtually any other metallic colour with the luster of metallic inks on the final printed job. Approval XP and Recipe Color software also allow printers to proof spot colours on the actual substrate. The GATF reports that one InterTech judge noted, "By combining this technology with new metallic donors, green and orange donors for six-colour process printing, and white donor and clear receiver, Kodak Polychrome Graphics has solved a difficult problem for packaging and metal decorating printers, as well as general commercial printers." "Approval first received an InterTech Award in 1993. Since its formation, Kodak Polychrome Graphics has made tremendous technology investments in the Approval system to ensure it stays ahead of the changing needs of our customers," said Gary Ryerson, worldwide marketing director, proofing, Kodak Polychrome Graphics. "Winning the InterTech Award is evidence that our efforts have paid off and that Approval continues to be the industry standard in digital proofing."
