Screen Americas Selected MBO to Engineer Unwind/Rewind System that Supports High-Quality Print on Heavier Stocks
Better Tension, Better Precision, and Increased Web Control Equals Improved Digital Web Press Performance
PHILADELPHIA - Screen Graphics and Precision Group's (Screen GP) digital inkjet presses can now produce heavier substrate jobs without speed or quality compromise, as the result of a development partnership with MBO America. Custom versions of MBO America's entire line of unwinders, rewinders, angle bar turning stations, and tension controls units have been specifically engineered to support Screen GP's latest digital inkjet presses. Those interested may see the systems running live at an Open House being held September 13-16 at Screen America's headquarters in Rolling Meadows, IL. "You would think that there wouldn't be much give in a digital press configuration -- it's just the nature of the binary beast," says MBO America Director of Sales, Lance Martin. "MBO has been handling paper since the company was founded in 1965, and so we know quite a bit about optimizing the paper path for maximum throughput and minimal waste.
Martin says that MBO today can meet digital press challenges of individual companies, as well as large vendors like Screen, because it is bringing highly accurate, yet flexible technologies in via modular systems. "It's the perfect setup for digital presses, which are solid state, sturdy, consistent machines that offer plenty of flexibility, but only through programming and software," he says. "Since the digital press doesn't have the mechanical give that an offset machine does, we're doing the moving around for them, and exploiting the full potential of the substrates that run through them.
"Better tension, better precision, and increased web control equals improved press performance."
How the partnership came about
In 2013, MBO met with Screen to discuss efforts to use heavier stocks on digital presses. With MBO unwind/rewind, printers gain the ability to produce heavier stocks and faster speeds with greater print accuracy and improved rewind precision. This is all due to the increase in performance provided by MBO unwind/rewind solutions.
To solve the two-part problem of decreasing curl and increasing pull power, MBO developed a strong pull station module (PSM6) and an air floatation turning station (WTS) to better transport the web from press unit 1 to press unit 2. MBO engineers developed a new class of unwinders and rewinders for Screen presses based on their experience with the MBO UW7 and MBO RW7 machines, built for the converting industry. Today, for instance, the Screen Truepress Jet520HD can support the range of substrates from 40 gsm to 250 gsm, as can MBO's UW and RW systems.
The new products are the MBO UW500/RW500 series unwinders and rewinders for Screen 150m/min class machines, and the MBO UW60
/RW60 unwinders for 250 m/min class machines. All units are designed with heavy stock capabilities, large diameter rollers, world class tension control, built-in buffering, and load capacity for up to 60" diameter rolls.
Screen America's Ken Ingram, Vice President of Sales, says,
"We are thrilled with the results of this pairing of sophisticated technology between the two groups, and look forward to showing this complete line in action at our open house event."
MBO Unwinders: The strong, silent type
MBO Unwinders have more speed, more precision, and less noise output than competing unwind-rewind solutions; meaning that MBO users can create tighter rolls, faster, and still maintain a normal conversation while standing next to the machine.
A roll that is inconsistently wound will need to be compensated for via a web guide and tension control system before entering the finishing stages - the alternative is to risk inconsistency in the final product. With MBO Unwind+Rewind solutions, the roll is constantly under control, resulting in extremely precise and consistent rolls, thus making every stage after printing run quickly and efficiently.
The New MBO in action
This latest partnership further portrays MBO America's New MBO philosophy, introduced during MBO America's 30th anniversary year. The New MBO is the product of a decade of development and a highly precise acquisition strategy, and new state-of-the-art headquarters with demonstration center.
MBO America, strategically located in Marlton, NJ, broadly serves the Pharmaceutical, Commercial Finishing, Packaging, Die Cutting, and Digital Finishing sectors in the Americas. From intricate folds and die-cuts to niche packaging with special standards, MBO edges out the competition with next-generation achievements in direct to finish, speed, and flexibility.
