Sun Chemical Introduces SunSys™ Resistance Coatings for Paper and Board Substrates for Direct Food Contact

Press release from the issuing company

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – Sun Chemical introduced its new SunSys™ resistance coatings, a series of water-based coatings formulated to impart or enhance resistance properties to paper and board substrates while at the same time being FDA compliant for direct food contact.

Designed to provide resistance to water, grease/oil, industrial chemicals, extreme temperatures, scuffing abrasion, and friction, the SunSys line of aqueous coatings provide converters and brand owners an option to be able to offer a more sustainable and less expensive package, replacing traditional barriers used in the market, such as polyboards and pre-coated boards, as well as wax and laminated films.

“In today’s marketplace, there is a strong demand for convenience and on-the-go meals, but retailers who stock the products packed in paper-based containers with functional and barrier coatings, also want an environmental-friendly solution at a lower cost,” said Bob O’Boyle, Product Manager—Coatings, Sun Chemical. “Our new SunSys resistance coatings can be used on boxes, trays, wraps, liners, shells and bags for fast food, fried/roasted chicken, donuts, baked goods, pastries, frozen food, deserts, microwaveable meals, clam shells and more. The resistance coatings also allow us to minimize the package structure and are recyclable and repulpable, thus reducing the environmental footprint.”

SunSys resistance coatings come with additional features including recovery from being frozen and the ability to be glued, sealed and formed. SunSys coatings come in a variety of finishes including gloss, satin and matte, and can be printed on flexo, gravure and rod coater presses.
