Business Data, Inc. Leverages Efficiencies of Screen Truepress Jet520EX to Deliver Increased Customer Value

Press release from the issuing company

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. — Growing numbers of document service organizations like Business Data, Inc. (BDI) are now turning to web-fed color inkjet technology for high-volume printing of financial statements and personalized marketing. BDI, a 30-year veteran of outsourced document delivery, recently installed the Screen Truepress Jet520EX at its corporate headquarters in Inglewood, California. After five months in production, the full-color variable data press is already proving its value as a fast and flexible complement to BDI’s existing lineup of digital cut-sheet printers.

The Truepress Jet520EX permits imaging directly from white roll to print, merging static content, transactional data and color graphics in one pass. As a result, BDI can generate electronically printed documents faster and more efficiently.

“Inkjet makes color variable printing more affordable, and the Truepress Jet520EX provides BDI with important tools for marketing and customization,” said Paul Holtzman, president and CEO. “BDI customers are now realizing higher response rates on promotional offerings by inserting impactful color graphics and personalized messages directly into the print stream.”

Dedicated to delivering reliable, secure document services for mail, online access and digital archive, BDI has achieved a reputation for responsiveness few firms can match. Since BDI’s founding in 1984, several hundred financial institutions and other commercial businesses have contracted with this world-class vendor to supply monthly statements, direct marketing and daily communications.

BDI acts as a clearinghouse for printing and electronically imaging documents, inserting offset-printed messages and promotions, and mailing the completed customer-communication packages to recipients. The company’s 83,000-square-foot headquarters near Los Angeles International Airport is staffed by over 150 employees. The pace of document production, which is steady and rapid on most days, quickens considerably during peak periods. A typical month-end production cycle includes several million impressions printed in just a few days.

The BDI team attended the Print ’13 show in Chicago with the intent of researching inkjet web press technology and its advantages. It was there that BDI encountered the Truepress Jet520EX system and Screen USA.

The Truepress Jet520EX features high-speed output of 210 feet per minute in full-color or black-and-white duplex imaging. With a 20.4-inch paper width, the Truepress Jet520EX is capable of printing up to 54,000 impressions per hour. This production capacity far exceeds the output capacity of BDI’s cut-sheet laser imaging systems.

In addition to high-speed and variable data printing, the Truepress Jet520EX boasts low energy consumption and minimal labor and maintenance. To facilitate inline roll-to-sheet finishing, BDI combined the press with a paper handling line from Lasermax Roll Systems.

“Color inkjet is quickly replacing conventional offset printing capability,” Holtzman noted. “We compared different inkjet systems available in the market and were very attracted to the Truepress Jet520EX’s reprographic capabilities and the purchase option available with Screen USA.”

Operating costs include paper and ink supplies without meter charges for images produced. According to Holtzman, this was a notable selling point differentiating Screen USA from many of its competitors. In addition, Holtzman was impressed by Screen USA’s underlying support and commitment to the product.

“Screen USA understood that the Truepress Jet520EX was a major purchase,” he said. “We needed a reliable partner with extensive knowledge and expertise to help merge new and old technology. Installation proceeded smoothly, and Screen USA’s thorough training program provided BDI’s technicians with the knowledge required to support and maintain the press moving forward.

“Screen is an excellent technology partner. The company’s senior management is accessible and willing to work closely with BDI staff. Our plan is to steadily migrate toward new inkjet technology, and Screen is a partner for the future.”
