Pittsburgh, PA, June 11, 2013—California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, also known as Cal Poly, has won the 2013 Print and Graphics Scholarship (PGSF) College Poster Design Competition. The poster, designed by Adam Houghton and titled “Set Sail For Your Future...with a PGSF Scholarship,” will be given to all colleges and high schools in the United States that have printing and graphic communication programs for the 2013–2014 academic year. This student-designed poster is used to promote the availability of scholarships to pursue a career in the graphic communication industry. The posters will be available in the PGSF Booth 5151 in Education Main Street during PRINT 2013 in Chicago, September 8–12, 2013.

The Poster Design Competition was entered by many classes and individual students who treated the competition entry as a real working assignment. “At Cal Poly we educate students by assigning projects that represent the expectations of industry—this project was part of Cal Poly’s 'Learn by Doing' education philosophy, and we are thrilled Adam Houghton’s poster was chosen!” said Lorraine Donegan, Associate Professor in the Graphic Communication Department at Cal Poly.

Ms. Donegan added, “As the cost of education keeps skyrocketing, any financial support is vital for our students as it allows them to focus on the learning process.

“It is the industry support of our program at Cal Poly that allows our students to experience the technology they will encounter in the field. It provides our students with the resources to learn and be successful once they enter the graphic communication industry.”

“All of the student submissions to the foundation were of a truly professional caliber, making it a challenging choice for our team of judges,” said Larry Kroll, vice president of development at PGSF. “Adam Houghton, Cal Poly’s winning student, used a unique approach, combining awareness of PGSF and the availability of scholarship funds with a call to fellow students to take action."

More than two hundred college students attending 72 schools are receiving financial assistance through PGSF. However, many more deserving scholarship applicants are turned down due to lack of funds.
