Former Robert Horne Sales Director, Roger Bennett Dies

Roger Bennett died on 10 September 2012, aged 83. He was best known in the industry as Northern Sales Director for Robert Horne Paper from 1969 until his retirement in 1985. In that period he established Robert Horne Paper as a leading force in merchanting in the North of England and Scotland.

In 1969 Robert Horne Paper bought Leicester paper merchant G E Lord. Robert Horne's owner and chairman Kenneth Horne moved Roger from Leicester to Leeds to develop Horne's presence in the north. Bennett transformed the company in the region, initially expanding the Leeds and Bolton operations and subsequently opening offices in Scotland, Newcastle and Liverpool. By the time he retired he had developed the business dramatically and was the inspiration to many salesmen and women who went on to have successful careers throughout the industry.

Outside of his work Roger was heavily involved with and committed to Mencap in Yorkshire. This commitment continued into his retirement.

Roger is survived by his wife, Alyx and children John; Robert; Paul; David and Sarah. His son, Nicky died in 2011.

Roger Bennett's funeral service took place at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Stockeld Road, Ilkley LS29 9HD on Friday 14 September at 11.00am.
