Selected from a broad range of industries including mining, manufacturing and energy, Forbes cited a range of Canon environmental initiatives including its Environmental Planning Center and Environment Promotion Center at Canon Inc., which help the Company measure its environmental performance as well as the publication of its annual sustainability report in both English and Japanese.

The list recognizes companies that have implemented globally recognized environmental management systems, published detailed disclosures of their environmental performance records and pledged to reduce their emissions and pollution levels. Further augmenting Canon's environmental efforts, Forbes recognized the disclosure of extensive information about greenhouse gases and CO2 emissions, as well as the recent ENERGY STAR Award for Excellence in Energy Efficient Product Design, awarded to Canon U.S.A. by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
