CHICAGO - July 28, 2008--R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company announced today that an additional fifteen of its printing facilities across the United States have achieved Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) chain of custody certifications. Certification requires a third party independent audit and allows these facilities to display the SFI logo on materials produced using raw materials that meet the SFI standard. The newly certified facilities include book, retail inserts, shorter run commercial printing, magazine, financial printing, catalog, directory, and digital printing operations. These facilities also earned Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification recognition.
"These certifications reflect RR Donnelley's continuing commitment to sustainability," said John Paloian, the company's Chief Operating Officer. "They offer our customers another option that complements the more than 120 Forest Stewardship Council certifications that we have already achieved. We are pursuing a range of programs that expand our reduce-reuse-recycle model as we pursue our twin goals of operating more efficiently and achieving more sustainable practices."
The SFI Standard includes fiber sourcing requirements that promote responsible forest management on all suppliers' lands. SFI's chain-of-custody certification is used to tell buyers how much certified fiber is in a specific product. Its internationally recognized sustainable forestry certification program is among the largest in the world and is based on principles that promote measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk and forests with exceptional conservation value.
The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. Its certification logo can be printed on materials using qualifying papers.
Daniel Knotts, RR Donnelley Group President, said, "Customers who draw on the breadth of our platform can turn to RR Donnelley for sustainability certifications that reflect their own environmental efforts. We will continue to support certification programs that embrace and encourage responsible forest management across the world."
