WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis., November 2, 2007 - Stora Enso's long-time tradition of providing open and transparent reporting of its business operations continues with the publication of the North American Operations Sustainability Report 2006/07, Taking Responsibility.
The theme, "Taking Responsibility," expresses Stora Enso's commitment in North America to strive for continuous improvement in its sustainability performance. Significant actions were taken to balance economic, social and environmental responsibilities for the benefit of customers, employees, shareholders and the communities in which the company operates - both now and for generations to come.
Highlights from the 2006/07 report include:
Development of the company's new sustainability policy;
Strengthened engagement with climate change initiatives;
Exceeded Chicago Climate Exchange greenhouse gas reduction target;
Earned chain-of-custody certification for six North American mills;
Introduced FSC-certified paper grades with 30% recycled content;
Introduced three product lines certified to FSC, SFI and PEFC chain-of-custody standards;
Continued to implement mill-specific energy efficiency initiatives;
Reduced specific energy consumption;
Improved worker safety; and
Successfully negotiated unique labor agreements.
