St Ives Plymouth invests in new multi-million pound Goss M-600D press to print leading UK magazine titles
Press release from the issuing company
October 25th, 2005 – St Ives Plymouth, part of leading UK printing group St Ives Plc, has placed an order with Goss International for a new twin-web Goss M-600 D web press. This latest investment will allow the facility greater efficiency while further boosting both quality and capacity for printing the UK’s premier high-quality magazines, brochures and catalogs.
According to Andy Prudden, Director and General Manager of St Ives Plymouth, print quality was the key driver behind the new order. “The magazine market thrives on quality, while a high service level and timeliness are also key to success. Offering total flexibility and compatibility in an increasingly time-sensitive publishing business is our primary goal. What we look for in a new press is the highest print quality and the Goss M-600 has just that, along with a range of high-value added benefits including reduced makeready times and waste.”
The new Goss M-600 press at St Ives Plymouth will replace an existing M-300 press and complement another M-600 press that was installed in 1997. Prudden confirms, “This latest Goss M-600 D press will bring obvious efficiencies to the whole printing operation. Streamlining our operations and making the printing process more efficient is a key by-product of this order.”
John Charnock, St Ives Group Technical Director explains, “Our contract titles are some of the UK’s leading magazines so we must ensure we can reproduce to their strict and demanding quality requirements. We cannot afford to become complacent and must continually look at ways of improving production. The Goss M-600 has a reputation for proven print quality, reliability and flexibility and along with our existing M-600 press in operation at Plymouth it will offer a streamlined production facility that is highly efficient.”
The new eight-unit Goss M-600 press will be specified with the Goss Autoplate plate loading facility, Goss Ecocool dryer and a new Goss JF-70 pin folder equipped with high performance rotary choppers. Capable of handling two webs for the production of 32-page products at up to 70,000 copies per hour, Goss Web Center technology features for managing the press include the Goss Omnicon control system, Omni Presetting software and Omni Makeready module to provide fast job start-up and changeover times as well as consistent controlled operation. The press has also been specified with closed-loop color, register and cut-off controls.
Jon Roberts, Manufacturing Director of St Ives Web Division states the benefits of the choice of press. “Aside of being one of most popular commercial web presses on the market, there are a number of specific features of the M-600 press that make it the perfect choice for St Ives. The Autoplate automatic plate loading system allows extremely quick job changeovers that mean less downtime between jobs. Meanwhile, the design of the ink rollers, with their convertible inking and dampening capabilities, provides exceptional ink coverage.”
David Emeny, Managing Director of St Ives Web Division relates, “The UK commercial print market is very competitive so we invest in the best available technology in order to retain our pole position in the industry. Providing value-added services continues to be a primary goal and we are committed to delivering on our promises.”
The new press will be installed at the Plymouth facility by Summer 2006.
John Chambers, Goss International’s UK Commercial Web General Sales Manager concludes, “The Goss M-600 press has earned a reputation worldwide for the highest print quality with over 2000 printing units installed. The entire press range now has a series of advanced features offering a full range of benefits to the printer. The St Ives Group has a number of Goss presses across its facilities both in the UK and the USA and this latest order confirms that the Goss M-600 press continues to be a leader in its field.”
