Reston, VA - Graphic Arts Show Company announced today that it will host a special display of the psychological operations mobile printing capability at the upcoming PRINT 05 & CONVERTING 05, September 9 – 15, 2005, at McCormick Place, Chicago, IL. This educational display of 3,000 square feet, will feature psychological operations mobile printing equipment. Army Reserve PSYOP soldiers will be on hand to explain the equipment, which includes a system called the Deployable Print Production Center (DPPC) mounted on a Humvee, towing an equipment trailer.
Soldiers will offer live demonstrations of PSYOP’s on-site mobile printing capabilities. The system, equipped with operating presses, is used to print various psychological operations leaflets, flyers, and communiqués for foreign audiences when deployed.
“We’re particularly pleased to host this special display at this year’s international event, as it sheds some light on an area of military service that doesn’t get a lot of attention in the media,” noted Regis J. Delmontagne, president of the Graphic Arts Show Company, the show’s producer. “It shows that printing is still a key communications tool globally, and that it can be used to touch our lives in ways most people don’t think about very often. We’re glad the U.S. Department of Defense has seen the value in displaying such material to the printing public. Additionally, it shows that printing as a trade is still a very viable and useful career path, no matter where you start your career.”
The 15-year-old printing technology has been employed by military PSYOP battalions based out of Fort Bragg, NC, Joliet, IL, and Los Alamitos, CA. The print unit has rapid deployment capabilities to provide communications support as a part of the overall battle plan. The equipment, including a high-speed Risograph Duplicator, PC graphics platform using Corel Draw, high-quality color scanner, color LaserJet printer, and cutting equipment, has been modified to meet PSYOP specifications for combat deployments, including shock mounting for portability.
The RISO units used in the unit produce more than 1,800 leaflets per hour and more than 90,000 in a 48-hour period. The unit requires two to five soldiers to operate, including two illustrators, two printers and a maintenance technician.
The unit will be in booth #8269 in McCormick Place North.
PRINT 05 & CONVERTING 05 will encompass over 725,000 square feet of exhibits, and host almost 800 exhibiting companies from around the world with 70,000 registrants.
