Cataloger Norm Thompson Makes its Earth Choice with Domtar Paper
Press release from the issuing company
MONTREAL, April 25 - Catalog publisher Norm Thompson Outfitters has switched the offset paper for its Sahalie catalog and all its corporate order forms to products from the new Domtar EarthChoice line of socially and environmentally responsible papers. Norm Thompson's selection of this paper earned praise from both ForestEthics and Rainforest Alliance.
Norm Thompson's Sahalie catalog is one of the first in North America to be printed on paper made with fiber from forests that are certified to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. Domtar EarthCote is currently the only coated catalog paper that contains up to 30 percent post-consumer waste content and a minimum of 17.5 percent FSC-certified virgin fiber.
"Domtar has committed to provide the right paper options to help our customers and corporate end-users meet exacting social and environmental standards," commented Domtar's Vice President of Marketing William George. "In fact, the 13 ethical papers that make up the Domtar EarthChoice product family are endorsed by Rainforest Alliance and welcomed by ForestEthics and World Wildlife Fund, giving companies like Norm Thompson peace of mind."
Norm Thompson is widely recognized as a pioneer among catalogers for its support of environmental causes. In the late 1990s, the company partnered with Environmental Defense and mapped out a plan to increase recycled content in its catalogs. The company's partnership with Domtar is the next phase of this business strategy.
"Domtar shares our ongoing commitment to the environment, and we appreciate their wide breadth of FSC-certified products," commented John Emrick, Norm Thompson's President and CEO. "Our use of Domtar EarthCote for Sahalie is the first example of the business relationship we hope to maintain with Domtar."
"Domtar has resolved the issues that have traditionally been associated with environmental papers. By combining recycled fiber with FSC-certified virgin content, Domtar now provides companies like ours with the ability to meet our social and environmental commitments without compromising on quality," he added.
Nearly one-third of Domtar's roster of coated and uncoated commercial printing, premium graphic design and publishing papers can now be produced with FSC-certified virgin fiber and varying amounts of post-consumer waste content.
Over the past few years, Domtar has pursued a leadership role in FSC- certification. The company's stated goal is 100 percent certification of all its forestlands and mill operations to the FSC standards. Domtar's distribution is fully certified and eight of its 10 North American paper mills have achieved certification, with the remaining mills scheduled to obtain it by 2006.
The Forest Stewardship Council is a non-profit organization that sets internationally recognized standards for environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable forest management practices. Its standard is the only one endorsed by many of the world's leading environmental organizations, including World Wildlife Fund Canada, Rainforest Alliance and ForestEthics.
