Sun-Sentinel revitalizing its presses with COLORMAN towers from MAN Roland
Press release from the issuing company
Fort Lauderdale, Florida — The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is more than doubling the color capabilities of its Goss Colorliner presses with the addition of COLORMAN add-on towers from MAN Roland.
With a daily circulation of over a quarter million and a Sunday total of over 360,000, the Sun-Sentinel is one of the leading news sources in South Florida.
Sun-Sentinel Company currently runs five Colorliner presses to produce its namesake publication, as well as a variety of community newspapers. MAN Roland will upgrade four of the presses by replacing two existing units with two COLORMAN towers and adding a third high former on each of the revitalized presses.
“Our goal is to provide our customers with increased color opportunities,” says Bob Christie, Sun-Sentinel Company Vice President and Operations Director.
The Sun-Sentinel becomes the third Tribune Company property to upgrade its Goss presses with tower add-ons from MAN Roland. The Los Angeles Times has added COLORMAN towers to 10 of its 15 presses, and the Chicago Tribune is integrating 19 eight-couple COLORMAN expansion units to its ten 10 existing web presses.
“When an industry leader like the Tribune Company fully embraces your solution for improving its products, you realize that your design, engineering and project management teams have hit a grand slam,” says Vincent Lapinski, COO of Web Operations for MAN Roland Inc. “We’re proud to have developed a cost-effective way for the newspaper industry to compete more colorfully against alternative media.”
While Christie received guidance from Tribune Company in his choice of add-on partners, he played a key role in the comparative-evaluation process, which included a fact-finding mission to MAN Roland’s Augsburg facility and a number of demonstration visits to newspapers that publish on COLORMAN presses.
Beyond the technology, it was MAN Roland’s logistical capabilities that also convinced Christie: “In comparison to other suppliers MAN Roland has superior project management methodology.”
Al Miller, Sales Manager for MAN Roland newspaper systems in the South, notes that the integration of COLORMAN towers with Goss equipment at the Tribune facilities reflects the depth of MAN Roland’s tower add-on capabilities. “Any newspaper that is looking to expand its color capabilities should talk to us, regardless of the press they’re running, because MAN Roland is focused on becoming the North American authority in paging capacity and color add-on for existing as well as new equipment,” he observes.
