CHICAGO, Aug. 9 -- Oce, a global leader in digital document management and delivery solutions, today announced that The New York Times is digitally printing its national edition and making it available in Athens, Greece for morning delivery throughout the Olympic season, via Oce's Digital Newspaper Network (DNN). This innovative digital printing technology creates a newspaper with the same look and feel as the offset version. The Times is one of 13 newspapers, and the only U.S. based publication, participating in Oce DNN's digital-printing runs during the Olympics. From August 3-31, the Monday through Saturday issues of The Times will be printed digitally in Athens, Greece. The entire Sunday newspaper will be flown in to Athens from the U.S. and available for sale the following Monday. The Times will be distributed throughout the city, the Olympic Village and media centers, and to major hotels by 11 a.m. local time (4 a.m. E.D.T.). Oce DNN comprises a data center, print service providers and distributors. In Athens, Oce and ComPage, a printer distributor in Greece, are partnering with Delta Singular Outsourcing Services (DSO) to produce editions of newspapers from around the world, including the Financial Times of London, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Asahi Shimbun from Japan. The newspapers will be distributed by the Hellenic Distribution Agency, Greece's largest newspaper importer, within minutes of editorial sign-off, thereby avoiding costs and delays of flying in newspapers. ComPage will provide 24-hour support to the production facility to ensure the timely distribution of the newspapers. Once editorial and advertising pages are completed, the publishers send their ready-to-print digital templates in a PDF file to the Oce data center in Poing, Germany. From there, the data is routed within minutes via a secure network to DSO. The service provider produces the newspapers with an Oce Newspaper System 7000 that is being used specifically for production during the Olympic Games. This system delivers one thousand 24-page newspapers per hour, all with the same look and feel as the conventional versions.
