(Norwell, MA) June 18, 2003…In a recent research study conducted by CAP Ventures, analysts predict that with continual refining and productizing of existing technologies, document management solutions will develop into a broad, mainstream market for routine document applications in office environments. The results of the research are available immediately in a new report entitled Document Management: Driving the Automation Opportunity in Today’s Digital Workgroup.
The purpose of the research was to gather key data on the current applicability of document management technologies in the office environment. The primary focus is on document management tools designed for storage and retrieval of documents used in routine day-to-day processes that drive communication throughout an organization.
Key findings include:
Office documents were most frequently identified as currently being managed with a DMS (document management system), and office environments were most frequently identified as the area of greatest need within an organization.
Nearly 63% of respondents were familiar with document management-related technologies and solutions. Of those familiar with such solutions, slightly more than half have considered purchasing a DMS.
The ability to quickly search and find documents was the most important requirement relating to the storage and management of paper documents.
The most important factors in implementing a DMS were the ease of use and the ability to meet the training requirements of an organization, followed by an expectation of increased office worker productivity.
“While document management technologies for office environments are still at an early stage of development, customers are beginning to recognize the benefits of implementing a solution,” commented Joel Mazza, an Associate Director at CAP Ventures. “This opportunity will drive a new phase of growth in the IT industry around appliance platforms and integrated document management solutions for routine document processes in environments like large workgroups, as well as small and medium-sized organizations.”
CAP Ventures' research survey quantifies the interest level among users as well as the general features of and capability preferences for document management solutions. The research findings are based on 111 respondents, including IT managers, purchasing managers, and senior managers. Our findings indicate that a significant portion of users who do not have a DMS in place intend to implement such a solution before the end of 2004. These findings will help vendors package the right capabilities and supporting technology to meet the needs of this market.
