SHS Digital xPress Helps Government With Their Xerox iGen3

Press release from the issuing company

ROCKVILLE, Md., & ROCHESTER, N.Y.--April 29, 2003-- Xerox Corporation announced that SHS Digital xPress has purchased a Xerox DocuColor iGen3(TM) Digital Production Press, with another on order, allowing the health communications firm to produce more effective print campaigns for its government agency customers. The firm's production of digital color pages is expected to grow from 850,000 last year to an estimated 4 million in 2003. SHS Digital xPress is part of Social & Health Services Ltd., a division of ORC Macro, an Opinion Research Corporation Company. SHS uses a broad range of tools and media to develop communication programs and materials to improve the quality of life throughout the nation and world. The company's work involves disease prevention and health promotion, concentrating on substance abuse prevention, mental health and adolescent health. The firm's clients are predominantly government agencies with strict budgets, and SHS needs to provide extremely cost-effective solutions that meet government agency requirements. According to Ramona Arnett, executive vice president, SHS, the DocuColor iGen3's cost-effective operation, print speed of 100 impressions per minute and excellent image quality are all benefits that enable the company to best fulfill clients' expectations. These iGen3 features are unmatched among cut-sheet digital presses. "Our goal is to help the client reach its audience with the most impact possible," said Arnett. "People respond better to color, and our clients wanted more and more of it, but they just didn't have the budget. With the addition of the iGen3, color printing is now affordable, so clients can shift jobs from black-and-white to color and still stay within their budget." The company produces educational, training and marketing materials on the iGen3. "Cutting-edge communications firms such as SHS have discovered that digital printing excels at tasks not possible with offset - providing the highest quality materials for short and medium runs, quick job turnarounds and personalization," said Frank D. Steenburgh, senior vice president and general manager, Xerox Production Color Solutions Business. The DocuColor iGen3, for example, provides the speed needed for print-on-demand capabilities, which according to Arnett is more important than ever before because customers are increasingly requiring jobs to be completed at the last minute. In fact, during a recent snowstorm when there was no access for days to the inventory stored in the completed materials warehouse, the iGen3 enabled SHS to print materials on-demand, without missing deadlines. The iGen3's print-on-demand capabilities also allow SHS to keep the inventory current by printing the exact quantity needed. SHS produces a 116-page catalog for The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information of the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, reprinted on demand using the iGen3, which allows printing supplements every two or three weeks. "The flexibility of the iGen3 is a cost-effective solution for our customers," said Don Koller, business development director, SHS Digital xPress. A Xerox business development team -- spearheaded by SmartPress Production Consultants -- supported the new press on-site for the first two months after installation helping to maximize business potential and revenue-generating volume. "Our SmartPress consultant was an invaluable resource as we made the transition to the iGen3," said Koller. "The support from Xerox is key to the success we've had so far, and the success we expect in the future." SHS Digital xPress is a full-service health communications organization with 260 employees and handles all aspects of a campaign - from market research to design to implementation. Other services include Web development, media and public relations, video and multimedia production, call center operations, warehousing and fulfillment. The company has been a Xerox customer since its inception in 1991, and currently uses a Xerox DocuColor 2060 Digital Color Press and a DocuTech 6180 Production Publisher in addition to the DocuColor iGen3.
