-- Foundation Established at Seybold Boston '99 Raises ALS Awareness and Funds Graphic Arts Industry Scholarship --
CHICAGO -- September 24, 2002 -- The Tom McMillan Foundation will present its 4th Annual Tom McMillan Award for Editorial Excellence at a ceremony at this year's Graph Expo Conference and Exhibit. Nominations from public relations professionals serving the graphic arts community have been accepted since early September. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony which is scheduled for Monday, October 7th at 1:30 PM in McCormick Place South, Press Briefing Room S501.
Tom McMillan was Chief Editor of Electronic Publishing for seven years and invested more than 15 years as a writer and magazine editor specializing in electronic publishing and computer graphics technology. He was diagnosed early in 1998 with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, which he fought until his death the following year at age 47. The Foundation was formed in 1999 to support Tom in his fight against ALS. Ongoing support comes from founding members who continue to raise awareness for this debilitating and incurable disease, and through the annual presentation of an editorial excellence award in Tom's name to an industry journalist.
Past Winners...
Tom McMillan received the first Award for Editorial Excellence at an emotional ceremony conducted in conjunction with Seybold Boston in February of 1999. Tom succumbed to his illness just 5 months later in July. In 2000, Stephen Edwards of Seybold Publications was voted overwhelmingly as the second recipient of the McMillan Award. Last year's winner, Earl Wilken, a long-time industry veteran, was met with great support and enthusiasm. We expect this year's winner will also receive such resounding support.
Also Funds Scholarship...
In addition to the awards ceremony, the Foundation funds an industry scholarship, established with the help of the National Scholarship Trust Fund of the Graphic Arts (a division of GATF) to aid students pursuing a career in the graphic arts.
