Pantone and ColorVision Unveil LCD/CRT Spyder for Monitor Calibration
Press release from the issuing company
SAN FRANCISCO - September 25, 2001 - Today at Seybold San Francisco, Pantone, Inc. and ColorVision Inc., a Datacolor company, announced the LCD/CRT Spyder, the newest member of the PANTONE COLORVISION product line. The LCD/CRT Spyder is the next generation of the award-winning CRT Spyder. The new Spyder is an all-digital, seven-filter colorimeter that supports both LCD and CRT monitors.
"Although there has been significant adoption of LCD screens over CRT monitors, it has been notoriously difficult to calibrate the LCD screens due to their inherent physical nature," said Richard Herbert, president of Pantone. "With the advent of the new LCD/CRT Spyder, LCD monitor calibration and profiling are now an affordable reality."
"The new LCD/CRT Spyder is a significant improvement over the CRT Spyder developed last year," added Brian Levey, vice president of ColorVision. "Our customers will be pleased with the way we solved the attachment problem, the accuracy of the calibration and, of course, the price."
The LCD/CRT Spyder has eight sensors and seven long-pass filters that allow it to closely match the human eye response, resulting in highly accurate monitor calibration. To accommodate the anti-glare coatings and mutable nature of LCD monitors, the LCD/CRT Spyder adds an accessory that allows gentle and flat placement on the screen, keeping the suction cups off the surface. To maintain placement, three clear-molded parts connect to hold the Spyder centered, keep it flush to the face of the display, and adjust for every size and style of monitor. The appearance details complement Apple's high-tech displays.
The LCD/CRT Spyder also has a unique light channel that limits the effect of off-axis light when calibrating LCDs. Additionally, the software recognizes and compensates for the greater variety of response curve shapes when bringing LCDs into calibration.
The LCD/CRT Spyder is supported by either PhotoCAL or OptiCAL software.
PhotoCAL walks the enthusiast through a series of simple steps to deliver precise color in the widest range your monitor is capable of producing. OptiCAL provides the demanding user with advanced features for adjusting calibration parameters for a single monitor or calibrating multiple monitors to a common standard. These tools include a wide choice of gamma and color temperature targets, curve manipulation, precision and expert control modes, information windows, monitor focus and geometry and uniformity correction utilities.
