Minneapolis, MN, 18 September 2008—Buhrs Americas—together with its parent company, the leading international provider of mailing solutions—is celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the Buhrs organization. Since its founding in 1908 in Zaandam, The Netherlands, Buhrs has grown from a small engineering and machine shop to a leader in sophisticated machines for the high speed handling and wrapping of mail and other printed products.
Buhrs was founded on 19 November 1908 by Theodorus Bührs, who was joined by his three sons in 1920 as the company grew. In 1958, the first Zaandam 1 Sleeve Wrapping System for magazines was introduced, followed by several other modules for processing magazines. In 1973, the Buhrs brothers sold the company to Buhrmann Tetterode, and it began manufacturing cardboard box folding machines and printing machines for the packaging industry. Buhrs introduced its first film wrapping system at Drupa in 1986. In 1993, the company was purchased by Adrian van der Klooster, who led the company to become the worldwide market leader in wrapping and paper handling machinery.
Discussing the centennial of the company, Buhrs Americas President and CEO Michael Aumann said: “Buhrs Americas is proud to be part of a company with such a distinguished heritage of service to the printing industry. Our success is directly attributable to our legions of happy customers worldwide, who have learned to rely on the precision, quality, and reliability of Buhrs machines.”
