Domtar Obtains an Industry First for its Forest Practices Near Trenton, Ontario

Press release from the issuing company

MONTREAL, July 27 - Domtar Inc. is pleased to announce that it has obtained Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for its forest management practices in the Gilmour Forest near the City of Trenton, Ontario. This is the first FSC certification for Domtar in Canada and the second in North America. In April 2000, Domtar obtained a similar certification for its private lands in the State of New York. Domtar's practices in the Gilmour Forest were also awarded the Resource Manager accreditation by SmartWood(CM), which is a forest management certification program recognized by FSC. This particular accreditation permits Domtar to offer henceforth, certified services to private woodlot owners in that area. It is the first of its kind in North America. "Domtar is very pleased to be the first company in North America to be accredited Resource Manager by SmartWood(CM) and to have operations in a second location certified FSC. This latest certification clearly demonstrates that Domtar is committed to sustainable forest management. We are also proud to be in a position to bring to the marketplace forests products that ecologically minded consumers can buy with confidence, '' said Craig McManus, Senior Vice-President of Domtar's Forest Resources Group. "Domtar is the only company to have forest operations certified by an FSC accredited certifying body in both Canada and the United States''. Domtar is an industry leader and among the first companies to reach this international certification standard. Their leadership and high quality forest management practices in the Trenton area provide the local communities with opportunities to adopt long-term, balanced forest management approaches that value and preserve wildlife, the environment and timber," said Richard Donovan, Executive Director of SmartWood(CM). SmartWood(CM), awarded the environmental certification to Domtar, after a comprehensive audit of forest management operations on 65,000 acres of Domtar owned lands and several other woodland properties it manages for private landowners. The audit process included a week of field work by a three person Smartwood auditor team visiting forest sites and consulting with stakeholders, including independent peer review and other consultations on Domtar's management activities. Domtar has been managing the Gilmour Forest for more than 40 years and has been offering professional forest management services to landowners in the area for over a decade. Domtar is also actively involved with FSC Canada in developing Regional FSC Certification Standards for both the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence and Boreal Forest Regions. In the development of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence standard, Domtar offered its Gilmour Forest property as a test site to FSC to evaluate regional standards. Domtar's forest management practices on all lands it manages directly will be certified ISO 14001 or according to the standards of the FSC by the end of 2001. Currently 2 million hectares or close to 25% of Domtar forest practices are certified. Finally, all forest users and the general public can review and provide comments on Domtar forest operations on public lands. This can be done by accessing the company's corporate web site at www.domtar.com under the heading Forest Resources Group.
