Press release from the issuing company
The Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Labour may be paying you a visit. Here’s what you need to know now, and what you should do in the future.
When does an Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) have to be performed? Do all printing companies, regardless of size, need to have an ECA in place, or are there exceptions? Is an ECA update something printers can do on their own, or does it need to be signed off by an expert? Why do implementation costs vary so much? Are there ways printing companies can stay up to date for less? As a printing company, what best practices are a must to satisfy the MOE/MOL and set you up for future success? In other words, what should you do right now, and what should you do to guarantee stress-free, long-term compliance? The next Digital Imaging Association (DIA) Meeting Wednesday, January 15, 2025, will answer these important questions.
The presenters
Frances Edmonds, Head of Sustainability at HP Canada since November of 2015, has been a print industry pioneer when it comes to successfully driving business value from sustainability investments and initiatives, setting strategies, and identifying and implementing new and emerging opportunities. First hired in 1999 as an environmental health and safety manager, her role expanded as she and her team began putting some of Canada’s earliest Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs in place. Among her many accomplishments, she helped form Electronics Product Stewardship Canada, a not-for-profit industry-led association that still works with the provinces to implement electronics waste-management regulations.
Ensuring that employees and partners are aware of HP’s sustainability leadership, she also acts as a trusted advisor to sales teams and customers alike. Her other responsibilities include marketing HP’s leadership through all business channels, including social media, and support of the company’s Global & Americas Teams, including managing HP’s global volunteer program. In her almost two decades with the company, she’s helped shift HP towards a more circular model before many other companies put an emphasis on waste reduction. In her early days of working as a scientist testing water quality for a local UK water authority, Edmonds witnessed first-hand how industrial discharges were polluting natural ecosystems. This sparked an early desire to be part of the solution. Today, Edmonds has turned almost all of her attention to developing sustainable procurement practices. She is a graduate of the University of Bradford (UK) with a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science.
