Prodigi Develops Exclusive New Sustainable Packaging in Global First, with Move Set to Revolutionize Both the Print on Demand and Packaging Sectors

Press release from the issuing company

Prodigi breaks new ground with the launch of Ecocaps – an eco-friendly alternative to plastic cardboard tube end caps. The first moulded fibre packaging of its kind, this fully compostable new product reinforces the print on demand platform’s ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and plastic consumption.

Developed in-house using a unique blend of recycled paper products, Ecocaps addresses a critical gap in the market for sustainable packaging solutions. Fully compostable, biodegradable, and recyclable, they negate the need for traditional plastic end caps, saving two pieces – or 10g worth – of plastic per shipment of rolled prints and posters from Prodigi’s fulfilment centre in the UK.

A phased roll-out for packaging on all Prodigi rolled prints and posters shipped from the UK began in February this year, with deployment in the US scheduled for November. The transition, which has eliminated more than two million pieces of plastic from the company's supply chain to date, follows Prodigi's successful removal of clingwrap from its packaging materials in 2022.

Steve Levin, co-founder and chief production officer at Prodigi, stated: “Ecocaps isn’t just a first in the print on demand space, but also across the wider packaging industry. Until now, this product simply didn’t exist. Swapping the plastic end caps on our shipping tubes for Ecocaps has already eliminated over two million pieces of plastic from our operations – and we're just one business. If more companies follow suit, the combined impact would be transformative. We're already witnessing significant demand for this product, and we’re excited to announce that Ecocaps are now available for resale to businesses and suppliers looking to enhance their sustainability efforts. For more information on how to integrate Ecocaps into your operations or to place an order, we encourage any interested parties to get in touch."

“This in-house development underscores our commitment to lead by example when it comes to innovation and sustainability,” added James Old, founder and CEO of Prodigi. “In addition to supplying this product to the wider packaging industry, we’re also working on an initiative to encourage other print on demand providers, including our competitors, to adopt our Ecocaps. Protecting the planet requires all of us to pursue innovative, creative solutions to continuously reduce our environmental footprint. Together, we can collectively make a substantial contribution to minimising global plastic consumption.”
