Press release from the issuing company
Michiel van den Berg, Global Head of Product Management, to present “Blister Pack Sustainability: From Rightsizing to Recyclability.”
Company also will showcase blister packaging solutions with various sustainability offerings, PVDC structures for high-barrier applications and next-generation plastic container fill-seal machinery
Wayne, PA – TekniPlex Healthcare, which utilizes advanced materials science expertise to help deliver better patient outcomes, will give a presentation highlighting multifaceted strategies toward making blister packages more sustainable at The Pharma Days, June 5-6 in Geneva. At June 5th at 2:20 p.m., Michiel van den Berg, Global Head of Product Management for TekniPlex Healthcare, will deliver Blister Pack Sustainability: From Rightsizing to Recyclability, which addresses multiple avenues in light of rapidly evolving EU packaging sustainability regulations.
Notably, van den Berg’s presentation considers the very latest updates regarding the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which recently announced long-term healthcare application exemptions for both recyclability and recycled content incorporation. Still, these exemptions will be reviewed in the coming years, and mandates for minimizing packaging weight and volume will take effect in 2030.
Considering the issue’s various regulatory and customer preference elements, van den Berg will discuss several paths toward enhancing sustainability in blister packages, including materials minimization, recyclable substrates, and introducing appropriate percentages of recycled content.
Aligning with the presentation, at The Pharma Days Stand C24 TekniPlex Healthcare also will showcase its range of more sustainable blister packaging solutions. Most recently, the company introduced a pharma-grade blister film with 30% post-consumer recycled content (PCR) on a mass balance basis, The solution incorporates partner company Alpek Polyester’s Octal rDPET™ Sheet technology and, when combined with TekniPlex’s Teknilid® Push polyester lidding, yields a blister package recyclable wherever the polyester stream exists.
TekniPlex Healthcare also will exhibit the world’s first fully transparent recyclable mid-barrier blister package. Recyclable in geographies where the #5 (polypropylene) recycling stream is available, the mid-barrier blisters feature a polyolefin blister film paired with a barrier PP lidding film. When introduced last year, the solution marked the first time a formed blister + lidding combination with moisture barrier was certified as recyclable – a significant milestone. TekniPlex Healthcare also will exhibit a recyclable polyester mono-material blister + lidding combination, suitable for products that do not require barrier protection.
In addition, TekniPlex Healthcare will highlight its recently incorporated next-generation filling and sealing machine for TekniPlex dedicated plastic five-vial strips. The Pentafill® A25 Filling & Sealing Machine offers several improvements over previous models, including heightened sterility and a smaller footprint. Capable of producing up to 25 five-vial strips (125 vials total) per minute, the PentafIll® A25 filling and sealing machine is suitable for filling a wide range of viscosities for applications serving the pharmaceutical, diagnostics, nutraceuticals and animal health markets.
TekniPlex Healthcare also will showcase its Flexapharm® SBC series of PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride) coated PVC structures, which offer exemplary barrier against oxygen and moisture. Also on display will be an array of Aclar® laminates designed to preserve the efficacy and shelf life of drugs with demanding environmental protection requirements.
