5/29/01 - (WhatTheyThink.com) The file transfer company, Whalemail was acquired in February by SwapDrive. WhatTheyThink.com tried on several occasions to reach executives at Whalemail for comment but were unsuccessful. SwapDrive released a press announcement on February 20th describing the event. We were unable to compile details of the transaction. Whalemail was an advertiser on the Graphic Arts Monthly web site for several months and expressed an interest in the print industry. The service allowed users to transfer up to 75MB safely across the internet and was designed for both graphic arts professionals and consumers. The company stated "the other guys don't allow users to store anything larger than five megabytes for any longer than seven days. This will help our service." SwapDrive is a provider of online storage and file management software and services. The company appears to have the graphic arts industry in it's sight as evidenced by the recent announcement with DocumentPlanet. Under the agreement, DocumentPlanet will offer SwapDrive's Web-based file storage, viewing, sharing and editing capabilities to its customers and partners within the commercial printing community. SwapDrive acquired the Virginia based company, its technology and customer base of more than 50,000 users - mostly consumer accounts. "The traditional method of using FTP to send large files is a cumbersome and unreliable process that is dependent on a remote host server to transmit data. Through WhaleMail's technology, users are afforded easy and secure access to a virtual hard drive via the Internet to transfer and download files as large as 75 MB - in almost real time," said Marc Wallace, CEO of SwapDrive in the statement.
