Sappi’s ‘The Standard 7’ Wins Graphis 2024 Design Awards

Press release from the issuing company

Sappi North America upholds century-long legacy of the standard series

Boston – Sappi North America, Inc., a leading producer and supplier of diversified paper, packaging products and pulp, announces that Volume 7 of The Standard has won Gold in the Print Promotion category of the Graphis 2024 Design Awards. This award is given to the most compelling work from global talents in design, advertising, photography and illustration art. The Standard 7 explores the power of haptics and the growing importance of sensory packaging in heightening brand experience and driving sales.

The original Standard was published in 1924 and later resurfaced by renowned designer and entrepreneur, Cheryl Heller, from 1994-1998. Today, and for more than a decade, Sappi and Kit Hinrichs, principal of Studio Hinrichs, continue the century-long legacy of the series.

“The Standard 7 is an extension of the pride we exhibit in our sustainably manufactured, premium paperboard, and the series represents part of Sappi’s continuing legacy to create unique educational resources for professionals in the print and packaging business,” said Patti Groh, Director of Communications, Sappi North America.

Kit Hinrichs has designed 7 volumes of The Standard series to date. The decades-long relationship with Sappi reflects a like-minded partnership that values educational resources for the print business and professionals. Kit’s dedication not only extends to his attendance at every press check, but also in his assurance that each volume of the series is of the highest quality.

“The Standard provides inspiration to advance innovative print communications and ultimately create multisensory experiences,” said Kit. “The latest edition is particularly special because it details how packaging has become the pivotal touchpoint that reinforces all marketing efforts. Sensory packaging has grown increasingly instrumental in creating a memorable and profitable brand experience, which is why we included specialty techniques on how to stand out in a crowded market to foster connection with customers."

Each edition focuses on a single aspect of the print and design process, allowing for a closer, more detailed look at each phase. Over the years, topics have included preparing files for press; color management and calibration; varnishes and coatings; scoring and folding; special effects; and bindery techniques. The latest edition focuses on the power of packaging perceptions.

The 2023 Graphis win is not the first award an edition in the series has won. The Standard 4 won Gold in 2012 and in 2013, The Standard 5 also won Merit recognition from Graphis. Additionally, The Standard 5 received a 2013 Holmes Report?Gold SABRE award for its outstanding accomplishment in the Industry Sector category of Business-to-Business: Chemicals & Industrials.
