(NYSE:CAJ), today announced the availability of scanning functionality on the imageRUNNER 5000, a 50 page-per-minute, black-and-white, digital multifunction device. The high-speed scanning capability is targeted for general office use, and can potentially replace traditional document distribution methods such as fax, mail, and overnight delivery services at a significant savings in cost and time. As a base digital copier offered in two configurations, the imageRUNNER 5000 "S" standalone version is completely upgradeable to include network print and scan functionality, with the "N" version delivered with standard network print and scan capability. Scanning on the "S" model can be made possible by installing the Canon Network Multi-PDL Printer Kit-A1. "The availability of scanning on the imageRUNNER 5000 strengthens a product line that has already achieved strong success in the general office market," said Tod Pike, senior vice president of Marketing, Canon U.S.A. "With this new capability, it quickly becomes apparent that the imageRUNNER 5000 can serve the document production and distribution needs of customers who are demanding higher price/performance and ease-of-use from their imaging systems." Supporting resolution up to 600 x 600 dpi in scan mode, the imageRUNNER 5000 uses Canon Network ScanGear, a 32-bit TWAIN-compliant driver that allows the transmission of scanned images from the device platen or feeder to be sent to a client desktop or server on the network. Network ScanGear consists of two components, the aforementioned driver, and ScanGear Tool, which allows the selection of specific scan-enabled imageRUNNER 5000s on the network. Canon Network ScanGear allows scanned images, once received at the desktop, to be edited within any 32-bit TWAIN-compliant software application. The imageRUNNER 5000 performs JBIG file compression prior to network transmission to decrease network traffic and increase speed through the 10/100 Ethernet connection. Once received at the desktop, ScanGear decompresses the image and displays it in accordance with the application making the request. From an operating system standpoint Network ScanGear is compatible with all major Windows environments, including 95, 98, Millenium Edition, NT Version 4.0, and 2000. Hardware requirements for the imageRUNNER 5000 using Network ScanGear includes the following: * IBM PC/AT or compatible using Windows 95/98/Millenium Edition/NT 4.0/2000. * A recommended minimum of 100 MB hard disk space. * A minimum16 MB (32 MB recommended) of RAM for Windows 95/98/Millenium Edition and a minimum 32MB (48 MB recommended) of RAM for NT 4.0/2000. * Monitor providing a minimum of 640 x 480 dot pitch display (800 x 600 dp recommended), with a minimum of 256 colors. * A network host adaptor providing TCP/IP and UDP/IP protocols over Ethernet or Token Ring Preset scanning resolutions using Network ScanGear are at 150, 200, 300, 400, and 600 dpi, with actual scanning speed dependent on the level of grayscale selected and image composition of documents. Designed around a robust print engine capable of supporting 2400 x 600 dpi and 256 grayscale resolution, and up to 200,000 impressions per month, the imageRUNNER 5000 caters to large corporate departments by bringing the reliability and document handling feature set of systems targeting the Central Reprographic Department (CRD) to the general corporate office. With a suggested list price of $17,000 for the "S" model and $20,000 for the networked "N" model, the imageRUNNER 5000 is available through authorized Canon U.S.A. dealers and subsidiaries.
