Over the past decade, Two Sides Anti-Greenwashing Campaign has succeeded in eliminating billions of instances of anti-paper greenwashing by major North American banks, utilities, telecoms, insurance companies, retailers and other organizations, preserving more than $300 million in annual revenue for the paper, printing and mailing sector. But there’s more work to do, and we need your help!
As rising inflation challenges companies to cut costs, many continue to use claims that going paperless is “green” or “helps the environment” to encourage their customers to switch from paper to electronic bills, statements and other important communications. Two Sides members and supporters remain our most valuable resources in helping to identify companies that use unsubstantiated environmental claims to disguise their cost-cutting efforts.
Psychological research has shown that when people see and hear unsubstantiated claims over and over again, they start to believe them as true, and ultimately incorporate them into their decision making. Two Sides research revealed that 65% of U.S. consumers who have seen anti-paper greenwashing claims from their service providers are influenced to switch from paper bills and statements to digital versions.
