Enhancing the security, design, customer engagement, supply chain management, and environmental performance of packaging for high-end cosmetics
Tokyo – Toppan, a global leader in communication, security, packaging, décor materials, and electronics solutions, and Düsseldorf-based subsidiary Toppan Europe GmbH (Toppan Europe) will exhibit at Paris Packaging Week, due to be held on June 29 and 30 at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.
Paris Packaging Week 2022 is an international event showcasing packaging technologies and design for items such as high-end cosmetics, perfumes, and luxury drinks. The previous event in 2020 saw 650-plus companies from more than 80 countries and regions participate and attracted in excess of 10,000 visitors, predominantly from leading global brands in the cosmetics and other sectors.
Recent years have seen increasing demand for packaging that reduces environmental impact. Consumer goods manufacturers are also looking for ways to maximize customer satisfaction by making effective use of customer touchpoints that are diversifying due to the ubiquity of digital devices. Initiatives in which the public and private sectors work together to create a sustainable society and drive high-level digitalization are gaining pace. The European Commission adopted its new Circular Economy Action Plan in March 2020, setting out a policy to ensure that all packaging on the EU market is reusable or recyclable in an economically viable way by 2030, and in March 2021 announced the 2030 Digital Compass, aimed at advancing digital transformation.
Toppan and Toppan Europe are participating in Paris Packaging Week for the first time to present the latest smart and sustainable packaging solutions to the global cosmetics and beauty industry. Under a key concept of “Digital & Sustainable Transformation,” the Toppan Group aims to create value for society and is striving to enhance corporate value and contribute to a sustainable society through digital transformation (DX) and sustainable transformation (SX).
Main solutions on show
With the aid of demonstrations, visitors to the Toppan booth will be able to experience at first hand the latest in smart and sustainable packaging solutions.
Smart packages with built-in NFC functions
New packages in which tamper-evident NFC tag functions have been integrated into the structure of paper-based packaging to enhance package security, maintain design quality, and streamline the process of applying NFC tags.
As a way to combat fraudulent activities in the supply chain, NFC communication circuits with a brittle structure are built into packages. This achieves a higher level of security than attaching a conventional NFC label to a package surface and reduces the workload for affixing the tags.
NFC labels with high-quality design enabled by decorative printing technologies
While employing metallic finishes for a premium look, these labels maintain the communication performance required of NFC tags. In addition to offering high-quality design, they combine decorative printing techniques, foil design patterns, and antenna design technologies to overcome the problem of NFC communication being inhibited by metal materials.
Product ID authentication platform
A cloud-based service in which ID devices applied to products can be read by consumer smartphones or dedicated devices in plants or warehouses. This enables brands to provide product information and authenticity verification, run digital promotions and other services, and use data collected to facilitate supply chain management functions, such as traceability and detection of grey market diversion.

More readily recyclable mono-material barrier packaging
Rather than laminating multiple materials to perform different roles, Toppan has leveraged its proprietary GL BARRIER transparent film to create high barrier packages with mono-material compositions. Their superior suitability for recycling has been recognized by multiple European recyclability assessment bodies.

Barrier coated paper for packaging
Sustainable packaging that delivers both the content protection of high barrier performance and the environmental benefits of a paper mono-material structure. Adopting paper as the base material removes the lamination process and enables a structure that uses no aluminum foil. This makes it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by up to approximately 35% (Toppan calculation) in comparison with conventional products using plastic films.
