Press release from the issuing company
Washington, DC – The Postal Regulatory Commission (Commission) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded funding and support through the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) to invest in mission-critical information technology infrastructure optimization initiatives.
The Commission will use the TMF award to adopt a cloud-based applications system and develop three critical platforms that are essential to its role as the regulator of the U.S Postal Service. Specifically, the Commission will invest in 1) a new user-friendly public-facing website, 2) a replacement of its legacy docketing system, and 3) the development and deployment of a comprehensive data management system. Complementing these initiatives, the Commission recently hired its first chief data officer to lead data governance and open data efforts. The TMF investment will accelerate the agency’s ability to deploy and scale these important projects to meet its mission of ensuring the transparency and accountability of the Postal Service to the American public.
Commission Chairman Michael Kubayanda said, “The investment will empower the Commission with the tools to continue to implement data-centric, consumer-centric, and citizen-centric approaches to regulating the postal system. It will allow the agency to achieve operational efficiencies that include faster and increased analysis of data, improved website navigation, and reduced operation and maintenance costs.”
The Commission oversees the U.S. Postal Service, relying on a small career staff with deep technical and legal expertise. As a micro agency, the Commission must make efficient use of its resources and leverage its technology and data platforms in order to meet the increasing challenges facing the postal system. The TMF award provides a needed boost to the Commission’s present resources, allowing the agency to expedite technology investments and avoid years of delay in addressing IT infrastructure needs.
The TMF, authorized by the Modernizing Technology Government Act of 2017, enables agencies to reimagine and transform the way they use technology to deliver services to the American public in an effective, efficient, and secure manner.
The Postal Regulatory Commission is an independent federal agency that provides regulatory oversight over the Postal Service to ensure the transparency and accountability of the Postal Service and foster a vital and efficient universal mail system. The Commission comprises five Presidentially-appointed and Senate-confirmed Commissioners, each serving terms of six years. The President designates the Chairman. In addition to Chairman Michael Kubayanda, the other commissioners are Vice Chairman Ann Fisher and Commissioners Mark Acton, Ashley Poling, and Robert Taub.
