Prestigious On-Demand Book Printer Turns to RM Machinery to Meet its Customers’ High Expectations for Speed; Finishing Equipment Puts Printer Ahead of Schedule

Press release from the issuing company

Carneys Point, N.J. – RM Machinery announces the sale of the BQ-270V perfect binder and the HT-30C three-side trimmer by Horizon International Inc. to Rapido Books, an on-demand book printer based in Montréal, Québec. The equipment, which was installed in January 2021, has allowed the printer to remain ahead of schedule by two months.

The success of Rapido Books can be attributed to its founder, Simon Dulac, whose printing roots began in France where he was responsible for producing 25 weekly publications amounting to millions of copies per week. In 2013, Dulac made the transition from printing publications to printing books and set up shop in Montréal. His client base at Rapido Books consists of over 200 writers and publishers in Canada who produce everything from novels to cookbooks. The on-demand book printer offers an impressive selection of up to 10,000 combinations of the finished product and its books are available in soft or hard cover and may be perfect-bound, saddle-stitched or bound with spiral coil.

Speed has been a key contributor to Dulac’s success as he delivers his customers a test copy within 48 hours and the completed print job in as little as 72 hours. His staff consists of 12 full-time employees and several part-time employees who operate the pressroom eight hours per day, five days per week. Dulac’s commitment to speed led him to bring some of his previously outsourced finishing applications inside. Prior to purchasing the BQ-270V perfect binder and the HT-30C three-side trimmer from RM Machinery, Rapido Books’ pressroom consisted of three digital presses. By adding the finishing equipment, Dulac has increased his output considerably. “Speed is in our DNA and we are very satisfied with RM Machinery,” said Dulac. “Normally our current year-to-date production would have been achieved by the end of June. Instead, we managed to achieve that same amount by April.”

The BQ-270V perfect binder is fully automated and easy to operate. For on-demand book printers whose print jobs consist of varying degrees of thickness, such automation can reduce makeready time considerably. While one book is being bound on the machine, the next project can be programmed on the binder’s 10.4-inch monitor. The BQ-270V perfect binder can handle books up to two inches thick and operates at a speed of 500 cycles per hour.

The HT-30C three-side trimmer is also fully automated and can handle a wide range of books with regard to thickness. The trimmer is capable of cutting multiple books at a time using a single knife up to a speed of 500 books per hour. As many as 40 jobs on the HT-30C three-side trimmer may be stored.

RM Machinery and Rapido Books are looking forward to continuing their partnership. The sale of the BQ-270V perfect binder and the HT-30C three-side trimmer marks the first transaction between the two companies.
