Sizing Up Inkjet’s Paper Requirements

In every printing process, the interaction between paper (or substrate) surface and colorant is an important factor in determining print quality.

In the case of inkjet, this is critical – and now many of the leading paper manufacturers are actively developing new grades for the high speed inkjet market. In November HP announced a new media certification programme for their T-series presses, with 70 papers tested and certified, including 8 offset coated grades.  Inkjet press manufacturers are identifying great opportunities as the share of inkjet increases, allowing a new area of growth to open. Alongside paper ink technology, water-based formulations are improving, and the resulting quality enhancements will open more new applications for inkjet.

Today, much of the printed volume is on uncoated paper, including newsprint. With water-based inks, the quality is not up to offset standards, but this situation is changing.
