The variety of print-ready rigid substrates is expanding thanks in part to the growing adoption of industrial flatbed printers, hybrid roll-to-roll/flatbed printers, and direct-to-object inkjet printers. Awareness of recent innovations in rigid materials gives print businesses, sign shops, and start-ups more opportunities to differentiate their product offerings.

Keep in mind that the range of materials and applications that can be produced on wide-format printers evolves with each new generation of printers and print buyers.

For example, the first-generation of four-color wide-format printers in the 1990s helped artists make limited-edition prints of their paintings. That’s still possible, of course. But creators today don’t need to master painting techniques to create ready-to-hang art.
