What was your first job? The one where you saw a paycheck with all its glorious administrative information and deductions for federal, state, and local taxes. When you started on your first day, how did that go? Did someone take you and show you what you would be doing? Did they clue you in on how the business ran and what other people did? Was there a hint about breaks and policies on how to dress and when to arrive? Did someone tell you who to call if you needed to be late or call in sick?

Unsurprisingly, many people don’t remember their first job, how they found it, if there was training, or what the rules were. The good news is that it must not have been traumatic! The bad news is that if you don’t remember that experience you may be missing an opportunity to create the best experience as you onboard new employees.
