Xitron (Hall 7a, D03) believes that in the industry’s rush to embrace digital printing, progress in workflows for offset lithographic production has become stalled. The company, a division of the Hybrid Software Group, aims to overcome the neglect with a solution it has announced in beta test at drupa: its new K2 workflow for offset prepress. 

Xitron, an OEM for the Harlequin RIP since 1977, has built K2 on Version 14 of the Harlequin Core. Incorporating assets from other Hybrid Software developers, K2 creates  a workflow based on an intermediate PDF file format that can be manipulated all the way up to interpretation and rasterization in the RIP.

The main advantage, according to Xitron, is that functions such as trapping and imposition can be applied directly to the PDF at any time, in any order, instead of processing them conventionally in the RIP. Because issues needing correction are visible in the PDF, they can be spotted and addressed there without having to re-RIP the file after the error has occurred.

The K2 method is said to be especially beneficial for imposition, since the PDF never leaves the workflow. This would make it possible, for example, to reimpose a 16-page signature as two eight-page signatures within the workflow instead of sending the file to be edited in a separate imposition program. 

K2’s built-in, dynamic imposition tool supports platesetting, hard-copy proofing, and electronic proofing. Xitron says that because K2 is compatible with every CTP device regardless of make or age, it’s no longer necessary to replace a platesetter in order to get the full functionality of an advanced prepress workflow. 

K2’s features also include color management, preflighting and ink remapping, drag and drop architecture, and an easy-to-navigate operator interface. Xitron plans to offer the workflow through its dealers in the U.S. on a self-hosted, perpetual-license model with service agreements for upgrades. In beta test now, K2 is expected to be commercially available in its full version at PRINTING United Expo (Sept. 10-12, 2024).

Xitron mit neuem Workflow-Konzept für Offset-Druckvorstufe

Xitron (Halle 7a, D03) ist der Überzeugung, dass der Fortschritt in Workflows für die Offset-Produktion durch den überstürzten Einstieg der Industrie in den Digitaldruck ins Stocken geraten ist. Das Unternehmen – eine Division der Hybrid Software Group – möchte diesem Manko mit einer Lösung abhelfen, die es auf der drupa als Betatest angekündigt hat: dem neuen K2-Workflow für die Offset-Druckvorstufe. 

Xitron – ein OEM für den Harlequin RIP seit 1977 – hat K2 auf Version 14 des Harlequin Core aufgebaut. Mit Einbindung von Assets anderer Hybrid Software-Entwickler stellt K2 einen Workflow zusammen, der auf einem PDF-Zwischenformat beruht, das bis zur Interpretation und Rasterung im RIP manipuliert werden kann.

Der Hauptvorteil besteht laut Xitron darin, dass Funktionen wie Über-/Unterfüllen und Ausschießen jederzeit und in beliebiger Reihenfolge direkt auf die PDF angewendet werden können, statt sie auf herkömmliche Weise im RIP zu verarbeiten. Da Probleme, die korrigiert werden müssen, in der PDF-Datei sichtbar sind, können sie dort erkannt und behoben werden, ohne dass die Datei nach Auftreten des Fehlers erneut geRIPt werden muss. 

Die K2-Methode gilt als besonders vorteilhaft für das Ausschießen, da die PDF-Datei den Workflow niemals verlässt. Das macht es beispielsweise möglich, einen 16-seitigen Falzbogen im Workflow neu als zwei achtseitige Signaturen auszuschießen, statt die Datei zum Bearbeiten an ein separates Ausschießprogramm zu senden.

Das in K2 integrierte dynamische Ausschießtool unterstützt Plattenbelichten, das Hard-Proofing und elektronisches Proofing. Xitron zufolge ist K2 mit jedem CtP-System unabhängig von Marke und Alter kompatibel. Daher ist es nicht mehr notwendig, einen Plattenbelichter zu ersetzen, um die volle Funktionalität eines fortschrittlichen Druckvorstufen-Workflows zu erhalten. 

Zu den Funktionen von K2 gehören weiterhin Farbmanagement, Preflight und Farb-Remapping, Drag-and-Drop-Architektur und eine leicht zu navigierende Benutzeroberfläche. Xitron plant, den Workflow über seine Fachhändler in den USA auf Basis eines selbst gehosteten, unbefristeten Lizenzmodells mit Servicevereinbarungen für Upgrades anzubieten. K2 befindet sich derzeit im Betatest und wird voraussichtlich auf der PRINTING United Expo (10.–12. September 2024) als Vollversion kommerziell erhältlich sein.
