Who Are You Hiring?

Every print shop is in the hunt for new team members. They are harder to come by these days as schools pivoted to teaching more courses focused on online delivery and fewer covering color management, prepress skills, and print operations. It begs the question, where should you be looking? Who should you partner with to find a flow of talent? Here are some ideas!

Did you wake up this morning wondering where to find talent for your business? Printers and converters in all segments are asking the same question! Trying to add new talent to sales, the front office, the back office, and production has become a treasure hunt.

The current workforce is aging, and the old ways of finding new talent have dried up. Most vocational schools stopped teaching the basic skills print companies have relied on for decades, and many of the colleges and universities with print-focused programs pivoted toward web skills over the last couple of decades. The result is that fewer people are entering the workforce who understand the various print segments, technologies, and job opportunities. There are even fewer who consider the print industry as an option. As an industry, it is time to become evangelical!

Where should you look if you can’t rely on vocational or post-secondary schools? The answer is in vocational and post-secondary schools, but with a different set of criteria. Instead of trying to recruit pre-trained print people, consider a two-pronged strategy!
