Planning for recovery is not something new in our industry. Whether you are a printer, a digital delivery specialist, or one of the many service providers that feed content and support, somewhere in the business should be a document that provides guidance on what to do in case disaster strikes. Defining what makes an event a disaster is a good place to start.

A disaster is an event, anticipated or unanticipated, that disrupts normal business operations to the extent that essential functions stop for a period of time. We are all familiar with hurricanes, tornados, seasonal severe storms, floods, and earthquakes disrupting business operations. These types of events can make it impossible for staff to get to the business. The building may be damaged, and there may be no power or water for an extended time. But these are not the only types of events that cause disaster declarations.
