International Paper to Use TAPPISAFE Safety Program at Selma Mill

ATLANTA, Ga. – International Paper (IP) will roll out the TAPPISAFE Safety Orientation Program at the Selma, Alabama mill. TAPPISAFE, a service of TAPPI offered in partnership with Alliance Safety Council, provides a standardized safety orientation program for contractors and is the only safety orientation program specifically designed for the pulp and paper industry, by the industry.  

“Safety is a top priority at all International Paper facilities. The TAPPISAFE program will provide the Riverdale Mill with a proven safety orientation system that will ensure all contractors have the same high level of safety orientation provided in a cost effective manner,” states Dave Niedzielski, Safety Health and Security Manager. “TAPPISAFE provides several key benefits including an easy method of tracking and verifying that contractors have the same safety orientation and ensures they meet the latest OSHA standards. It will help our employees and all contractors at our facility to work in the safest possible manner.”

The TAPPISAFE program provides a solid foundation in safety by addressing OSHA required awareness level safety orientation for any supplier or contractors that works in a pulp, paper or packaging facility. Key aspects of the program include: standardized courses that helps reduce redundant and potentially costly safety orientations, up-to-date OSHA compliance information, and instantly verifiable records. Key topics covered include hazard communications, personal protective equipment, hearing conservation, elevated work platforms, basic electrical work practices, material handling, hand powered tools, vehicle safety and confined space.

TAPPISAFE Programs also include; PSM (Process Safety Management), Truck Driver orientation and Employee orientation.
