NewPage Anthem Now SFI And PEFC Chain-Of-Custody Certified

MIAMISBURG, Ohio. – August 11, 2008 – NewPage Corporation announced today that Anthem, a No.3 coated paper, is now third-party chain-of-custody certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes.
Anthem, an 88 bright, blue-white coated paper, is used in sheetfed commercial printing applications for communications such as brochures, manuals, flyers, product catalogs and direct mail.
"Now with SFI and PEFC third-party chain-of-custody certification, Anthem offers its customers confidence and peace of mind knowing that they are using a product that is manufactured in North America with chain-of-custody certified wood fiber. The No. 3 coated sheetfed product category is particularly vulnerable to global sources of supply that may have questionable sustainability and environmental practices. "Chain-of-custody" is the traceable path logs take from the forest, through the pulp manufacturing process, to the paper mill, all the way through to the certified product sold to an end user. Compliance with SFI and PEFC standards means that NewPage is established and engaged in "best practices" to protect forests with exceptional conservation value, harvest using best management practices (BMP), protect streams, lakes and other bodies of water and promote efficient use of forestry resources while avoiding biodiversity "hotspots" and major tropical wilderness areas. Chain-of-custody must be in place at all steps along the supply chain in order for an Anthem printed label or package to carry an SFI and PEFC chain-of-custody label.
As of August 11, 2008, Anthem originating from NewPage warehouses is SFI and PEFC certified and will include the appropriate documentation.
