The Bureau of Engraving Installs KODAK INSITE Storefront System

Press release from the issuing company

ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 16-With a mix of customers that require the speed, print quality and short run convenience of digital printing, and the long runs associated with traditional offset, The Bureau of Engraving Inc. (The Bureau) in Minneapolis required a versatile web to print system that could accommodate all of its customers' challenges.

"We wanted something that worked with our solutions," said Patrick Stuart, Director of Marketing and Technology for The Bureau. "Customers kept asking for web to print, but most options out there were simple output applications, centric to digital output formats and devices. Those didn't fit our business model."

The Bureau turned to the brand it has long trusted for automation and digital technology, choosing the KODAK INSITE Storefront System to take the company from its traditional sales model to online ordering and job tracking with one complete solution.

The KODAK INSITE Storefront System offers everything printing companies need to support online ordering. With the capability to handle new orders or reorders of existing material, INSITE Storefront provides catalogs from which customers can order books and manuals, business identification products (such as business cards and letterhead), and collateral. The storefront system can be customized with the company's corporate branding and a flexible pricing engine; provides several types of online payment options; is localized in 15 languages; and can support177 currencies in 228 countries via CYBERSOURCE Solutions. It includes job tracking capabilities for customers and the printer's production department.

"INSITE Storefront eliminates multiple steps and many of the touch points in the process," said Stuart. "The web to file output applications offered by other manufacturers still required human intervention to print the job. We were interested in automating all of the steps, from web to output device. We can just release the job and it's on the output device. Plus, there's tracking to show that the job has been done."

The ability to use a web to print application with The Bureau's offset presses, as well as its digital printing operation, made INSITE Storefront the right choice, Stuart explained. "It's a hybrid solution," he said. "Now we can go after customers who want web to print capability, because we have end to end automation, even for the largest jobs. From the web to plates to the press-all of the process can be automated now."

KODAK INSITE Systems blend seamlessly with the KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System The Bureau put in place in 2006, delivering greater efficiency and press optimization by streamlining and automating the printing process. In addition, The Bureau runs a KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 Digital Production Color Press, a KODAK DIGIMASTER E125 Digital Production System, the KODAK APPROVAL XP4 Digital Color Imaging System, and KODAK MATCHPRINT Inkjet Proofer on the prepress side of the house. The $30 million company, in business since 1898, launched its digital printing division in 2003.

"The fact is that the younger generation in today's workforce expects to communicate on the web and using email," Stuart said. "We need to adapt to the changing business world, and give our customers all the tools they need to work with us. Other customers still want to talk to a person, and we have a traditional sales force for that. But now we can go after customers who expect us to have a web to print capability.

"Getting customers on the system doesn't happen overnight," Stuart noted. "It's another tool to go to market with, and we have customers actively using it to order directly from us over the web."
