Press release from the issuing company
FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany – TotalEnergies Corbion is advancing sustainable innovation with Luminy® Polylactic Acid (PLA), exploring its relatively untapped potential for durable, high-performance applications. Traditionally used in products like food packaging and 3D printing, PLA is now proving its value in demanding injection molding applications. At Fakuma 2024, the leading trade fair for industrial plastics processing, TotalEnergies Corbion will showcase how their scientists are evolving Luminy® PLA to meet the rigorous growing needs of consumers and brand owners.
Advancing Luminy® PLA Durability and Versatility
Historically associated with single-use packaging, PLA is now showing promise in durable goods, thanks to advancements in Luminy® PLA's heat resistance, mechanical strength, and weatherability through compounding. These developments make Luminy® PLA suitable for robust applications such as cosmetic jars, electronic components, and dishwasher-safe products. Additionally, innovations like flame-retardant and high-impact-resistant Luminy® PLA compounds are opening new possibilities in technically demanding areas where safety and durability are paramount.
Seda Cantekin, Global Segment Leader for TotalEnergies Corbion, said: “Luminy® PLA’s durable applications align with global sustainability efforts, as it is derived from renewable resources and boasts a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to conventional plastics like ABS, PS, or PP. What’s more, Luminy® PLA can be processed using standard techniques, such as injection molding, simplifying the transition to eco-friendly alternatives without compromising performance.”
