London–To work in the Loyalty and Gift Card sector is to understand that the card and its packaging are the first physical touchpoints of a company. It is the first insight into the brand. With this in mind, the design for the online banking service ‘Knab’ is comprised of a combination of design tools to create an unforgettable unboxing experience. Promoting a different way to bank, Knab is a young online bank in The Netherlands. Their company focuses on digital innovation, human service, and transparent service provision.

A close collaboration between packaging designers and client, the pack is an inviting on-brand experience. Burgopak’s optimised cabrio pack features a patented solution designed for a powerful and exciting unboxing. A tab is pulled which moves the cover upwards, becoming hidden in the pack, whilst simultaneously pushing out an inner tray to reveal Knab’s card for an inspired ‘tadaaa!’ effect. Produced on sustainably sourced 300gsm Invercote Creato board in double sided CMYK/CMY colour and offset printing, the Spot UV and Matt AQ textured finish give a fresh and subtle tactile feel. The design is simple and intuitive whilst giving the sense of something ‘more’ than the traditional bank. With the bonus of extra branding space, this design is an excellent marketing tool.
A move to sustainable and circular design has always been on the cards for this product. So how has this been achieved?
Holmen Iggesund’s Invercote paperboard offers a planet-friendly solution. Receiving the EcoVadis platinum sustainability rating (only awarded to just 1% of over 65,000 companies worldwide), Iggesund’s passion for sustainability is contagious. With the use of Invercote along with up to 70% less glue used in production, there is a significant reduction in water and energy consumption during manufacturing. Post-production, the paperboard is also biodegradable, compostable and 100% recyclable.

Consumer response for this product has been incredibly positive. Through communication with the client, the memorable mechanism and design of the pack brings opportunity for free organic reach and word of mouth marketing. In other words, the pack is an easy solution with maximum impact. Receiving the ‘Award of Distinction’ at the PAC awards showcases all aspects of Burgopak’s patented solution to packaging, including the flare of design and an impressive unboxing experience like no other.
