Production Inkjet: Welcome to the Revolution—Memjet Targets Light Production

The adoption of production inkjet so far has narrowly targeted mid to high-end production requirements. However, light production including higher-end departmental MFP devices currently addressed by EP (toner) devices is a significant portion of the market. Memjet just introduced a low-cost single pass OEM printhead solution to target that market. The tide may be turning…

(Watch David Zwang's interview with Memjet's Kim Beswick here.)

Memjet, the color printing technology company, has been developing MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) design thermal printhead technology for OEMs since 2007. Their Aspen technology, introduced in 2015 and now branded as VersaPassTM, has been implemented by many companies that produce web and label presses for applications including labels, flexible packaging, commercial, large-format, and corrugated. The 8.77-inch, 1600x1600-dpi printheads have provided an attractive solution since the beginning. From their inception, they have continued to refine the printhead and ink technologies, and, equally important, the platform designs to make it more attractive to OEM customers. The results of OEM feedback and this continued development provided the basis for their 2017 introduction of the DuraLinkTMplatform. That platform introduced pigment-based aqueous inks, a 10X increase in printhead life as a result of a new bonded heater design, and a more compact platform to allow OEMs to implement solutions more quickly and less costly.

That platform design has allowed many printer manufacturing companies to come to market faster and to adapt to the ever-changing market requirements. It has also allowed many to develop hybrid and bespoke printing solutions, some of which will be revealed in the near future. The interest in the DuraLink platform has been significant, with initial interest from more than 120 potential OEMs, translating to almost 80 actively looking at the engineering for product development. Of those, packaging solutions comprise about 56%. We can expect to see a significant presence of Memjet DuraLink OEM solutions on display at drupa 2020.

Labels and the Connected Supply Chain

Labels and the Connected Supply Chain

You can think of this very competitive connected supply chain landscape in four layers: material suppliers, label converters/printers, hardware OEMs, and software/platform players. The connected supply chain has changed from moving things hand-to-hand or through email to more full-featured automated systems. The good news is that, as a converter, after you decide where you would like to start, there are so many options for you to select from. Read More

Direct-to-Object: Challenging Labels and Tags or Offering New Opportunities?

Print is a very adaptive technology and direct-to-object (DTO) is another area where it can offer new opportunities for PSPs and product manufacturers. Today, most of the product and packaging decoration (i.e., labels and tags) that exists is handled by a label converter. It is a well-established process that probably won’t disappear. However, it can and will be challenged by inline DTO printing solutions, offering new opportunities. Read More

Labels: Technology and Markets Keep Opportunities Coming

Labels: Technology and Markets Keep Opportunities Coming

At its core, labeling is considered package identification and decoration. Its growth is driven by e-commerce, food/beverage demand, and regulations, where the market has surpassed 1.2 trillion square meters in production volume per year. The market is moving toward high-mix, low-waste production rather than only high-volume throughput. In practical terms, the winning equipment is the kind that can switch jobs quickly, inspect automatically, and handle variable data without slowing the line. Read More
