The [Office] Space Age: Signs By Tomorrow Transforms the American Diabetes Association’s New Headquarters

Environmental or experiential graphics are a growing trend in signage, with sign shops using the latest display graphics technologies and substrates to transform office spaces. As a result, sign and display graphics providers are working more closely with interior designers and architecture firms. Case in point: Signs By Tomorrow’s interior graphics for the American Diabetes Association’s new headquarters.

As anyone who has ever worked in an office—or seen the classic 1999 comedy Office Space—can attest, such environments are not often conducive to high levels of morale. However, a growing trend affecting the signage industry may help combat workplace malaise.

“It’s something that we like to help people with, helping boost morale in offices,” said Lori Garber, Operations Manager and Senior Graphic Designer for Rockville, Md.’s Signs By Tomorrow. Signs By Tomorrow has found itself increasingly in the business of creating environmental graphics for office interiors. “Signage overall, especially things like historical timelines, can help boost morale. It’s something we really like helping with.”

Signs by Tomorrow recently completed a major environmental graphics project for the American Diabetes Association’s brand-new 78,000-square-foot headquarters in Crystal City, Va., near Arlington. The myriad graphics the company produced included custom 3D acrylic logos, elevator wraps, room signage, privacy film, and vinyl wraps for columns and walls. The centerpiece of the new office space was a 30-foot vinyl window graphic depicting a timeline of the Association’s activities in its 78-year history.
