Business-to-Business Commerce aka Web-to-Print

Business-to-business commerce may not be getting the headlines in the print industry, yet across all industries in the US it’s nearly twice the size of the business-to-consumer market. It’s vital that printers understand the B2B opportunity and not confuse it with jumping into a price war with retailers online.

Business-to-business online commerce, referred to as B2B, is online commerce with customers with whom you have an established relationship. For most printers, this is the primary reason for moving their business online; enable their current customers to transact with them online in a self-service fashion. The most common example is a private storefront where the printer has configured the site branding, products, pricing, payment methods, etc… for the specific customer who has to authenticate (login) prior to utilizing the site.

On the other hand, business-to-consumer online commerce, referred to as B2C, is online commerce with people you don’t know yet. This is the art and science of building an online offering to offer products and services to the people you drive to the site via online marketing activities. Examples of this in the print industry include; moo.com, mimeo.com, frecklebox.com, shutterfly.com, and cafepress.com.

Virtually all the hype around online print commerce has been focused on the B2C side of the equation. Many new print companies have launched and leveraged the web to create multi-million dollar businesses in very short time periods. The hype has both confused and distracted the more traditional print businesses, those printers with an existing offline business that is based on local relationships, traditional sales resources, and full-service interactions with their customers. This confusion and distraction has kept too many printers from embracing the web as the most important business channel humans have created to date.
