Print and the Environment: Hemlock Printers is a case study about how to do it

More and more we're hearing that companies are "going green" – they're buying electric cars, going "carbon-neutral," putting bio-diesel in delivery trucks, buying energy generated by wind power, and offering recycled paper. That's all well and good; however when you talk to an industry leader in environmental ethics, you find there is even more that can be done.

Hemlock Printers, a family-owned printing company located in Vancouver BC, has been at the forefront both driving and adopting new ways of doing business with the goal of reducing its impact and the impact of the projects it produces on the environment.

In 2004, recognizing how resource-dependent the printing industry is, Hemlock created a Sustainability Committee to focus on improving environmental performance and introducing sustainable business practices to the company. The Sustainability Committee is made up of management and line staff and in 2006 was joined by Kate Scholz, an intern in an environmental studies program. For the last two years, Kate has shepherded a number of programs defined by the Sustainability Committee.
