World’s First China-EU Digital Product Passport for a Textile Product!

About a year ago, we provided an update on Digital Product Passports. While the news on this topic has been somewhat quiet, a recent article published by GlobalData caught my eye—the launch of the world’s first China-EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) for a textile product!

Back in January of 2025, we provided an update on Digital Product Passports (DPP) and other environmental regulations. Since that time, I’m sure there has been work going on in the background, but there hasn’t been much in the news…until now!

First, a reminder of what a DPP is: According to the Zero Carbon Academy, “The Digital Product Passport is designed to provide transparency across the entire lifecycle of a product—from raw material sourcing to end-of-life recycling options.” They explain the categories of the massive amount of data that brands must collect in order to comply with emerging regulations, primarily in Europe today, but likely to spread to other parts of the world.” DPPs will be mandatory for all textile products sold in the EU starting in 2027, which will be here before we know it!

In a world’s first, The National Advanced Functional Fibre Innovation Centre (NAFFIC) and supply chain traceability platform AWARE have launched a China-EU DPP for a textile product. According to the report, “This launch marks the first instance of a DPP that combines Chinese production with the new European compliance standard.…The first textile DPP traces the complete supply chain for a recycled polyester—from the post-consumer plastic bottles collected in China, processed into flakes and spun into yarn by Jiangsu Reborn Eco-Tech, to being woven into a fabric by Wujiang City Chaodai Textiles. The product was manufactured into a finished garment by Suzhou Qiandai Life Technology Development for the European brand Iqoniq.”
